History

Back Bay was a tidal bay and filled in after a plan to build a milldam meant to connect the city and neighboring Watertown failed. The project created land for development and began in 1857. Gravel for the filling project was brought in by train from the outer suburbs of the city and the present day Back Bay was filled by 1882. Today, the Back Bay is populated with harmonious rows of three and four story residential brownstones. Back Bay is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
